Inner West Council has partnered with Royal Life Saving for the provision of a design safety assessment of the proposed Callan Park Tidal Pool on the Parramatta River, Leichardt.

Council has set an objective to “identify and plan for new river swim sites” and, even more specifically to “reinstate Leichhardt tidal baths”.

In addition to healthy rivers, both Council and Royal Life Saving want to have a healthy community, by providing “facilities, spaces and programs that support community health and wellbeing”. Opening a new place for residents and visitors to swim and enjoy the Parramatta River at Callan Point will achieve both objectives in one project.

The design assessment provided by the RLS Industry Services Team provides the builders, architects, and Council with the best possible safety practices for the design and application of such a swim site.

Aquatic Industry Development Manager, Jason Phillips noted that “by incorporating relevant building standards, water safety best practice and guidelines for rescue and safety signage, the Callan Park Tidal Pool will be as inclusive and accessible as possible.”

Creating a place to swim and enjoy water can be a complex process, requiring an understanding of swim settings, and a commitment to collaboration with stakeholders and the community.

Business Western Sydney recently commissioned a report exploring the future potential of Parramatta River urging the NSW Government to adopt a framework of reactivating the local waterways for community and environmental outcomes.
