Over the past three months, Royal Life Saving NSW and Surf Life Saving NSW proudly partnered to deliver Community Water Safety Days at Penrith Beach.
Held across three separate events, the series saw over 250 community members come together to learn vital water safety knowledge and lifesaving skills — all in a welcoming, hands-on environment designed especially for at-risk communities in Greater Western Sydney.
With many families facing barriers such as language, cost of living pressures, or limited access to swimming programs, this initiative was a much-needed opportunity for people of all ages to build confidence and stay safe around water — no swimming required!
At each event, participants rotated through interactive learning stations, covering:
Inland Waterway Safety – staying safe around rivers, lakes, and dams
Lifejacket Safety – understanding the importance of lifejackets and how to wear them properly
Dryland Rescues – learning simple, effective ways to help someone without entering the water
CPR Awareness – gaining confidence in basic CPR skills and emergency response
Beach & Rock Fishing Safety – practical tips for safer enjoyment of coastal areas and rock platforms
Each session wrapped up with a group Q&A and a free lunch, as well as the chance to enjoy Penrith Beach.
This program was specifically tailored for individuals and families with limited swimming experience or access to water safety education. With an emphasis on inclusion, the series welcomed participants from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, making sure everyone had the opportunity to engage, ask questions, and build confidence in and around water.
This event series highlights the ongoing commitment of Royal Life Saving NSW to ensure that lifesaving water safety education is available to everyone — regardless of background or experience.
A huge thank you to all those who attended as well as NSW Government, Surf Life Saving NSW, Fisheries NSW and Maritime NSW for their support in making this a success.
Being a longtime volunteer Surf Life Saver and trainer with Royal Life it is great to see these 2 fantastic organisations working together. Lets move forward together, put political avenues aside, and make our beaches and waterways safer together by combining both sets of resources.
