STOP LOOK STAY ALIVE

Before you go swimming, boating or fishing this summer... Stop, Look, Stay Alive.

The National Drowning Report 2024, published by the Royal Life Saving – Australia in partnership with Surf Life Saving Australia, found there were 323 drowning deaths over the past 12 months, 16 per cent higher than the ten-year average (278).

In NSW there were 128 drowning deaths - a 33% increase on the 10 year average. 31% of these occur in inland waterways.

This summer our campaign has a simple message and focuses on three core actions to keep everyone safe – Stop, Look and Stay Alive.

  1. Stop

    • Before you go swimming, take a moment to:

      • Check your health.

      • Know your limitations.

      • Learn to swim or brush up on your skills.

  2. Look

    • Always take the time to:

      • Check the weather.

      • Check the conditions.

      • Read the safety signs.

  3. Stay Alive

    • Practice safe behaviours and always follow the rules to stay safe around water.

We are working with communities and governments to reverse this trajectory. We are working to ensure that all members of our communities have the opportunity to live, work or play safely and confidently around the water. We want all Australians to enjoy a water way of life, with the opportunity to develop the fundamental survival and safety skills to survive in the water and to protect their family or friends in an emergency.
