Overview

Royal Life Saving All Abilities is a nationally recognised course for swim teachers looking to gain specialist knowledge in teaching people living with a disability. Accreditation is valid for three years.

The All Abilities course will deliver the skills and knowledge required to effectively and safely, teach swimming and water safety skills to people with a disability. It will provide information on people living with a disability, their experiences and needs, and how you can best support them in aquatic activities.

Please note: Royal Life Saving Society NSW is not a CRICOS provider; it is unable to provide national training to overseas students holding a student visa.

Delivery Mode

Below are the steps and participant’s journey.

Step 1 Book a course. Upon fulfilling the prerequisite requirements, the All Abilities course material is delivered via a blended mechanism, involving online learning and on the job assessments, alongside third-party observation from an approved RLS Workplace Supervisor. Candidates must have access to a computer and the internet to access these online modules.

Step 2 Complete online modules. Candidates will be required to complete a self-paced online knowledge component. Only those who have completed the online modules in full will be able to complete the on-the-job assessments.

Step 3 Complete and Submit section 1 of the Unit Completion and Licence Workbook. This on-the-job assessment ensures the swim teacher can apply the skills learnt in the online course at their place of employment. The on-the-job component needs to be signed off by an approved RLS Workplace Supervisor. Candidates must submit the completed section 1 to their nearest Royal Life Saving office via email.

Step 4 Complete and Submit section 2 of the Unit Completion and Licence Workbook. In addition to the successful online and on-the-job assessments, candidates are required to complete a Swim Teacher - All Abilities Licencing Application. Candidates must submit the completed section 2 to their nearest Royal Life Saving office via email.

Section 1 and 2 of the Unit Completion and Licence Workbook may be submitted at the same time if suitable.

The amount of training is approximately 20 hours, comprising of:

·        Online learning and assessment: 8 hours

·        On-the-job teaching and assessment: 12 hours

Prerequisites

The following units from the SISSS00132 – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Skillset must be held, before commencing this course:

·       SISCAQU024 - Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills

·       SISCAQU025 - Teach water safety and survival skills

As these units of competency are newly introduced to the aquatics industry, we are providing a number of expedited pathways to attain these pre-requisites, depending on the qualifications the candidate currently holds.

Throughout the candidate’s enrolment process, they will be prompted to upload evidence of one of the above scenarios – it is important to ensure that units of competency are specifically listed.

Once accepted, the candidate will be enrolled into the relevant coursework. Coursework will be distributed 1-2 business days from successful enrolment.

Age Requirement

Candidates wishing to complete this training are to be 16 years of age or turning 16 in the calendar within which the course is to be held to participate in this course.

Outcomes

The Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher – All Abilities course contains a unit of competency which is nationally recognised from the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training package.

Upon successful completion of all assessment requirements, candidates will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the following unit:

·        SISCAQU028 - Assist participants with disability during aquatic activities
